George Matthews is a retired U.S. Air Force officer with over 22 years of active-duty military service.

He is the former Employment Assistance Program Supervisor for Army Community Service at Fort Meade Maryland (FMMD). In that role, he also supervised the Exceptional Family Member Program, Relocation Readiness Program, and Mobilization/Deployment Program. He has extensive experience assisting Military Service Members, Veterans, DoD Civilians, and their Family Members with transition decisions and processes, career exploration, and job search. Chief among his achievements in this role was his coordination and writing of a Memorandum of Agreement which established a partnership between FMMD and two local Workforce Development agencies. This partnership provided FREE Training and Certification to enhance the employability of community jobseekers, especially Military Spouses.

He also served as Department of Army Transition Services Manager (TSM) at FMMD. As TSM, he assisted Military Service Members through their transition especially in the arenas of Employment Assistance and Veterans Services Connections.  He was an Ombudsman who directed every facet of Transition Assistance Program (TAP) to include making budgetary decisions, devising new programs, conducting contractor evaluations, providing policy input, and most importantly collaborating with major stakeholders from the federal, state, and local level to ensure execution of congressionally mandated policies. He has written articles for G.I. Jobs and also wrote a career transition newsletter distributed to over 5000 global military associated members and wrote a well-applauded informational employment email bi-weekly. His signature achievements were introducing the Army’s first Executive TAP workshop, serving as a subject matter expert (SME) on HQ Army I.G. TAP inspection team, and serving as SME for the HQ Army team writing the TAP contract Performance Work Statement.

He was a Transition Assistance Program (TAP) Counselor and TAP Staff Supervisor at Fort Bragg North Carolina.  In that role he provided expert counsel, and supervised employees providing expertise to more than 10000 Soldiers annually.  He also worked directly with Veterans and key Stakeholders.  He was an expert at arranging and conducting job fairs, exceeding jobseekers and employers participation metrics by 300% respectively. 

George’s 22 years in the Air Force took him and his Family to various locations, including Clark Air Base, P.I., Randolph AFB, TX, Chanute AFB, IL, Ramstein AB Germany, and Pope AFB/Fort Bragg, NC. He also deployed to Desert Storm. His active-duty roles included Aircraft Maintenance Officer, Squadron Commander, Deputy Logistics Group Commander, HQ Staff Officer, Training Officer, and Air Force ROTC Detachment Commander.

He has a B.S. in Technical Aeronautics and a Master of Human Relations.

George has a history of involvement with civic-related activities. One of his mottos is “To those whom for which Much is given, Much should be expected.” He served on a Habitat for Humanity Advisory Board. He has also been a Church Brotherhood President, chaired his church’s Scholarship Awards Ministry, and Social Justice Ministry, Scholarship Foundation Treasurer, Neighborhood Watch President, Anne Arundel County Veterans & Military Families Affairs Commission member, and Howard County Workforce Development Board member. He’s also a member of Military Order of World Wars, Military Officers Association of America, and Maryland Military Coalition.

His military and civilian awards include Meritorious Service Medals, Outstanding Civilian Employee Performance Awards, and Program Manager Awards.

His favorite hobbies are reading (non-fiction) and golfing.

He is married to Teresa A. (Square) Matthews. They are proud parents of three children: Colette, Angelica, and George II.
